PSA: When was the last time you changed your blade? ✂️

My rotary cutters get a real workout - used daily by me and sometimes by my students. To keep track, I jot the date of each blade change with a Sharpie.

So treat yourself to a fresh blade for your holiday crafting. And when cutting gets tough, you’ll know - it’s not you, it’s the blade!

With the 2024 teaching year wrapping up, I finally have space to dive into projects that have been patiently waiting in the wings.

First up: my Scrappy Starman quilt! ✨ This one’s a sample for Summer School in Katoomba this January and a retreat in August.

The block, which I designed and launched recently for the @threadhouseuk Online Academy, will soon be available as a pattern with templates in both 12” and 16” sizes 🤗

It’s a stunning day here in Sydney - perfect swimming weather. Wishing you a week full of creativity and inspiration! 💕

Being a scrappy quilter, I have loads of bits and pieces. They eventually find new life in quilts and practical items.

The ruler caddy is perfect for skinny strips, the original was a cool gift by @poppyprint (tutorial in her IG stories🩵) while my long scrappy pinnie (pattern by @jenib320) and a hefty pincushion (pattern by @carolynfriedlander) help keep my sewing space organised ✂️💖

Fresh off the sewing machines today at @usefulbox - a new batch of Emmaline Retreat Bags! 🧵✨ Each bag turned out beautifully, and everyone left with that amazing “I made this!” feeling. We tackled skills like working with different interfacings, attaching zipper tabs, boxing corners, and even installing metal frames. Bag making is such a satisfying way to escape whatever’s happening outside these walls…and yes, there was cake. Because cake just makes everything better, right? 🍰😊

Yesterday, I swapped out the quilt in the entrance

Yesterday, I swapped out the quilt in the entrance for one that feels just right. Every time I pass it, I’m reminded of the dedication it took to bring something beautiful to life - all that cutting, sewing, pressing, and hand quilting. It felt endless at times, but I didn’t quit. I pushed through the doubts and those tricky “ugly” stages until it was finally finished. Only those who’ve tackled this pattern know the effort it demands: all those tiny nine patches and endless y-seams. No shortcuts here, you’ve got to do it right. It’s a metaphor for something, isn’t it?

Thanks to a bit of photo editing magic, I can test a look before committing to all 36 blocks for my next #starmanquilt! Starting with a stack of blues and pinks (current vibe, clearly 😜) and building from there. Loving the fussy cut Tula neon stripes at the centre - holding it all together!

This will get much scrappier in the final version, but I think it’s a keeper. Bonus points for faster machine piecing 🧵✨ This pattern’s coming out over the summer, once I clear a few (hundred!) things off the to-do list first 😅

It’s one of those perfect spring days in Sydney, with bright blue skies - though there’s still a bit of a chill in the air! After journeying across Australia with the Australian Quilt Show since April, these two beauties are finally back home.

What’s next for them? A few classes, possibly some new adventures… or maybe they’ll be transformed into my next quilt coat! 🧵✨ Huge thanks to @intocraft for keeping them in tiptop shape; they look as fresh as the day I (very last minute) stitched on those sleeves 😬
