Modern Quilt Show Australia, Kiama

24 June, 2015 by admin 2 Comments

Long overdue blog post number 2 this week. As Miranda’s mum would say, “bear with”!

Topic: Modern Quilt Show Australia, hosted by Wollongong MQG in Kiama, 30th & 31st May.

modern qult show flyer

Okay, right off the bat… I couldn’t attend this show as I’d absentmindedly booked myself out to teach in Brisbane this weekend. Rookie mistake. I will be making this show a priority in my schedule in the future as I heard so many wonderful things about it by those who did attend. Great vibe, exciting quilts, engaging discussions about where modern quilting stands today in Australia.

So, my only means of participating were by submitting two quilts for inclusion in the show. I have to congratulate the hardworking selection panel who picked the quilts to hang in this show, only the second time this event has been held. It’s a lot of work and not all the decisions are easy. From what I could see on social media that weekend and follow up blog posts, the show was a great success. Yay!

When I put my two quilts forward for inclusion they weren’t (ahem) actually finished, but I didn’t expect to have two accepted so I hedged my bets. I guessed which one would be accepted and started quilting that one. Then I received a notification that both were in and I frantically got to finishing them off. To put this in perspective I’d been busy finishing two quilts for the Sydney Show and wrangling together a GWSMQG group quilt entry too. In short, the house got very messy, and I probably wasn’t super social!

I was really happy with my finished quilts, Squircles was started at Quiltcon back in February in Carolyn Friedlander’s Aerial Grove class. I really, really loved making this quilt. I loved the freedom of not using a template or marking pen for the applique technique, I loved finding a variety of prints that would let the gorgeous Lecien yarn dye in the centre shine and I loved piecing the whole thing together like a jigsaw puzzle without referring to a pattern.

The improvisational quilting was a steep learning curve as I’d never tried portioning up a quilt top before and using a different pattern of straight line stitching in each section. It did break the job up and it made it less boring, which seems to be my main issue with quilting. It was still hard to wrangle though, 78″ x 78″ is not a huge quilt but it was still rather hefty to push through a domestic sewing machine. When I had finished both entries I treated myself to some hand quilting watching Carolyn’s Handwork Is Fun Webinar on the MQG website (members only). What a treat!

My second entry was a folly, a spur of the moment idea whilst scrolling through one of my favourite Instagram feeds “I Have This Thing With Floors”. I came upon an image of a tiled floor that I imagined I could make by simply using pre printed stripes. This was my fastest quilt top EVER, I’m working on a pattern for this quilt top so I’ll keep you informed…

I was thrilled to have both my quilts included in the Modern Quilt Show and so excited to hear that I Have This Thing With Floors got a Judges Commendation. Completely unexpected! Nothing for Squircles but it is now one of my favourite quilts! Here’s a list of all the winners.

I did have a hand in a few other winning quilts at the show: Our GWSMQG group quilt won 2nd place in the Group category, My daughter Sofia won 1st Place in the Youth category and another group quilt made with the fun gals I went to QuiltCon with earlier this year won 3rd place.

Thank you to all the organisers and sponsors of the Modern Quilt Show, it’s an exciting time to be a quilter and you are helping to get the word out there x

Phew, long post. One more to come this week. You have been warned…

There’s a reason why Stanwell Tops is a favourite launching site for hang gliders, it’s very windy! Dramatic cliffs with breathtaking views up and down the coastline.

🌬️

But all I kept thinking about was, will my husband end up on the news? And how many seams will pop with the force of this wind. I took two quick snaps and then bundled this Scrappy Trip flimsy back into the car. I love this photo though, Tone looks like a quilt monster!

I’m here to tell you that curved EPP (English Pa I’m here to tell you that curved EPP (English Paper Piecing) is absolutely doable! It’s one of the techniques I use to make miniature sampler blocks when I don’t have time or tools to prep for appliqué or make templates.

➰➰➰

Generally I use a print out on freezer paper and use that as my EPP templates by numbering the pieces and cutting the block apart. Then it’s just a case of sewing it back together, like a jigsaw puzzle!

➰➰➰

I use freezer paper because I’m only making one of each block for a sampler. But for repeated blocks I use thin card that can be reused.

➰➰➰

These blocks were made back in 2011 for my first Chuck Nohara quilt. Block patterns are from the Chuck Nohara book, 2001 New Patchwork Patterns.

➰➰➰

This is one of the techniques I teach my students in my regular monthly sampler classes. Come along if you’d like to learn more nifty tricks to get those quilts finished!

What do you think? I reckon it’s a good scrap buster that can be stitched by hand wherever you are. I love a portable project so I can squeeze some stitching into the busiest of days.

❣️❣️❣️

If it works, I’ll get some kits made up. They would make adorable cushions or bags. Would you like to make one?

🤪

Last October, when I finally made a quilt from my 169 Dear Jane blocks and then cut it up to make a coat, I was relieved!

😅

Those blocks had been finished since 2005, taunting me, in their little plastic folders. But I kinda fell out of love with the fabric and my piecing skills have improved so much since then, that I couldn’t imagine having this quilt around the house. All that work though!

🥹

But as I’ve found, those are the quilts that are perfect to turn into coats! Having quilt coats is really the only reason I now look forward to colder weather. Can’t wait to wear this one this winter. Imagine the conversations it will start!

When my quilting friend Maree passed away it took When my quilting friend Maree passed away it took the wind out of my sails. She was so clever and generous with her knowledge. And supportive of me and my teaching endeavours.

We had worked together, in a group of four, on four quilts. One of them was my Chuck Nohara quilt. Maree had made her own set of blocks but never got around to finishing her quilt.

Honouring all that work and skill was a labour of love. I never had a chance to discuss what her plan was before she left us.

Maree had an incredible skill with colour. One of the other quilts we worked on, the sweet Japanese baskets, she pulled together with an amazing purple and yellow border.

So I listened to Maree and finished her Chuck Nohara quilt with a purple and yellow border. I think people were shocked but I know Maree would have loved it. The quilt was raffled off for Quilt NSW. And someone I now know won it and loves it. That’s such a relief, thank you Maree and thank you @craftypinkcreates 💞

Hand made stitches are like fingerprints. They are unique and depend as much on your dexterity as they do on your needle, thread and even the thickness of the quilt you’re stitching through. Steady, regular stitches on the front and back are my goal. I love the texture and rhythm of them so much that I like to feature them by using a high contrast quilt back on my kawandi.

No other quilt has taught me more than the ones I’ve made using the little black and white drawings in Chuck Nohara’s 2001 New Patchwork Patterns! Some lessons are about friendship, personal growth and my professional development. Others are more tangible…

1️⃣ Anything goes, if you cut it small enough

2️⃣ Sashing and cornerstones bring everything together

3️⃣ There’s more than one way…

4️⃣ Do a little everyday and eventually you will finish it

I’ve always been incapable of sitting for long p I’ve always been incapable of sitting for long periods of time with idle hands. It’s one of my flaws. I reckon it’s why I don’t enjoy going to concerts or movies. My hands get bored. I was always the one doodling during lectures…

🤜🤛

I sew whilst “watching” something on my phone. I sew on airplanes, on the train, in the car, at the hospital, waiting to hear news…

🤲

Sewing focuses my thoughts and calms my busy mind. Whether it’s machine or hand piecing, hands keep the rhythm, fabric is the tune.

🙌

I’ve always had strong hands, they are hard workers too. Mixing cocktails till the wee hours, chopping tub fulls of vegetables in sleek steel kitchens. And these days they love wielding a rotary cutter with a nice new sharp blade. Cutting is still my favourite step in quilt making!
